Vision At The Down Under in New Brunswick, NJ 1-5-08

When I was in graduate school, I did not go to a lot of shows. I really felt pretty insular and basically just kept to a friend that I paled around with for my first year. She and I were very close, but she was away with family for most of winter break, so I headed up to this show with Justin and met up with some friends. I know nothing about the other bands that played because we just all hung out at a table and chatted. I also met up with a few old friends that I had…

Cro Mags-Sick Of It All-Blood For Blood at The World in New York City, NY 6-30-02

This was a show that began pretty bumpy, but ended up being okay in the end. John and I got a late start heading up to north Jersey. When we got onto the Turnpike to head towards Hoboken we missed our exit somehow and ended up having to go into the city via Jersey City instead. After wandering through New York City we eventually reached the venue. Thankfully we had tickets already because they were turning people away at the door. Some of my friends used to get really annoyed at my insistence on buying tickets when possible, but it…

War Zone-Uprise-No Contest-Purpose @ Manville Elks Lodge in Manville, NJ 6-30-97

I don’t think there was a flyer for this show? I think one or two other bands might have played this show, but I don’t remember who else they were. This might have been the first time I saw Purpose and I remember they covered Inside Out and Embrace, which seemed so out of left field in comparison to the youth crew style that was so popular at the time. I think a lot of people checked out Purpose, at first at least, not only because they were a decent band, but because their style was so different from what…

Lifetime-Endeavor at Melody Bar in New Brunswick, NJ 11-22-97

I was never a big Lifetime fan for a few reasons. First, certain members of this band were pretty much straight up assholes and I was always pretty turned off by them. Second, a friend of ours growing up used to use Lifetime songs to emote his gross romantic obsessions with a few lady friends of ours. Eww. Nonetheless, I drove up with some friends and then met up with a few other friends of mine at one of their parents house and we were off to New Brunswick. Lifetime played two sets because so many people showed up. I…

Striking Distance at Manahawkin NJ 2002 (?)

I don’t remember a ton about who played this show other than Striking Distance, but we had a lot of fun hanging out outside of this show. Our friend Brett brought his laptop and we watched episodes of Sealab 2021 in front of the venue and generally just hung out all afternoon. Striking Distance were good and I remember busted out a Sheer Terror cover at the end of their set.

High School Baking Class

This picture brings back some memories. One of my students this semester asked me about high school pictures of me (it’s a long story how this came up). I spent most of high school ditching any photo ops, including the famed senior portrait, but they did catch me in baking class as you can see below. I am fairly certain that is an old Revelation era Shelter shirt I am wearing. This would have been in the fall of 1996. The two dudes with me are Rob and Anthony, who were both pretty cool. Rob was into a lot of…

Kill Your Idols-Ten Yard Fight-Tears of Frustration-Blind Society at Stewart’s Root Beer in Manahawkin, NJ Summer 1999

This show was actually sort of imfamous because Ten Yard Fight apparently broke up a day or two before the show (and would play a final show at the idiotic “Edge Day” thing later in the year). Kill Your Idols also cancelled at the last minute, which I ended up fielding a bunch of calls about. I think my phone number got attached to the show contact info somehow? I showed up to the show after work and caught a few of Tears of Frustration’s songs. I remember they were playing a War Zone cover as I parked, which was…

h2o-Vision-Kill Your Idols Wetlands 8-14-98

I went up to New York City with one of my friends. For some stupid reason, we decided to drive into New York City and got lost, but ended up parking in some random street and then heading to the show. We missed Kill Your Idols, who had a nice buzz about them after their first LP had come out maybe six months before, but got inside the show right as Vision started to play. They may have had the “Kids” album out by then, but they definitely played some of those songs plus the usual stuff. I remember buying…

Bane-Ten Yard Fight-Tears Of Frustration-Reach The Sky-Step Ahead @ Berkeley Heights 12-12-98

Who else played this show? A few others must have at least. In My Eyes were advertised, but I do not think they played? I went to this show with my friend Carson. Reach The Sky were kind of a hot, up and coming, band at the time. Carson got in a fight during Tears of Frustration after dancing pretty hard for them and a few people taking exception to him shoving someone. He was pretty bummed at how it all went down. Bane were not quite yet a huge band and looking back not many people really checked them…

Pointless Fest 2003

John and I made the trek to Philadelphia in a pouring rainstorm for this show. I remember we listened to some random reissue of Sabbath’s “Live At Last” album that totally remixed and messed with that record. We walked in just as Tragedy began playing and they were great as usual. Hilarious story from this show: So they bust into “The Day After,” which has this awesome mosh part in the middle. All the scumbag crust punks are walking around in a circle, so a friend of mine and I start moshing and going off. I got grabbed by some…
