Alive & Well 8-29-98

These “Alive & Well” shows were a huge deal at the time. I did a three show weekend starting with the Ink & Dagger/Bluetip show the night before in Philadelphia. I was really running my car all around the tri-state area. I cannot believe it lasted almost all the way into 2004! Day two was better than day one for sure, but more on that in a minute… So two big rumors that summer: Judge was rumored to be playing this, but the story went that Mike eventually said no. That actually seems reasonable. The other big rumor was Rest…

Sick Of It All-Ensign-Candiria-Indecision-IDK-Clubber Lang @ Edison NJ 6-6-99

I got in a brief scuffle during Sick Of It All’s set at this show. It was stupid and really bummed out afterwards because a few “friends” kind of distanced themselves from me. Whatever. In the summer of 99, I was so miserable and really falling apart. I don’t want to go into it too deeply on here, but right around this time was one of the lowest points in my life. I forget why, but during Ensign’s set a lot of people wore Strength 691 shirts. I guess because of Nate? I didn’t watch any of the other bands…

Matt Leveton Benefit 1999

The first ever benefit for Matt Leveton was in January 1999. Matt used to book shows at Manville and got seriously hurt in a car crash. These shows were a really big deal at the time and a nice showing of what can happen when the hardcore scene comes together for something good. The first day was highlighted by a reunion show for Strength 691. I remember seeing a lot of people who I had not seen in a few years, which is an odd feeling when you are 19, and hung around catching up with a lot of people.…

Breakdown-Tears Of Frustration-Grey Area-Voice Of Reason-Hopewell-Implode at Berkeley Heights NJ 8-14-99

This show did not get a big turnout, but Breakdown was playing so you knew we were going to be there! Rain On The Parade cancelled this show, but Tears Of Frustration got added. We got to the show as they began playing, but I do not remember much about their set. Grey Area were a band with members of Token Entry that played really melodic stuff. They had a record on Victory around this time. Breakdown was, of course, the big attraction at this show. They played their usual great set as they did a lot around this time.…

In The Blink Of An Eye Fanzine #2: The Reviews

These were the reviews from In The Blink Of An Eye Fanzine #2 (#1 was a brief one pager that a few of these reviews appeared in originally). After a few issues of What Was Said, I switched names and tried pretty unsuccessfully to reboot the fanzine. A lot of the same problems that plagued WWS were all over this one too. This came out in the summer of 1998. I am thinking late in the month of August perhaps? I did not do another fanzine for about eight months before the first issue of Parade Brigade Fanzine came together.…

Cro Mags-Sick Of It All-Blood For Blood at The World in New York City, NY 6-30-02

This was a show that began pretty bumpy, but ended up being okay in the end. John and I got a late start heading up to north Jersey. When we got onto the Turnpike to head towards Hoboken we missed our exit somehow and ended up having to go into the city via Jersey City instead. After wandering through New York City we eventually reached the venue. Thankfully we had tickets already because they were turning people away at the door. Some of my friends used to get really annoyed at my insistence on buying tickets when possible, but it…

Warped Tour 1997

It’s so funny to me that my students still go to this thing and are super psyched on it. Back in the nineties, this seemed so corporate and annoying. I cannot even imagine what it is like now, but I guess FESTS are this massively normal thing now, so whatever. No one seems to blink an eye either at the expense of these shows either. I only went to this because I got onto some kind of promotional guest list. The local record store got some passes so they gave me one and a few friends of mine got them…

Cockney Rejects-Sick Of It All-The Ducky Boys @ Union Transfer in Philadelphia PA 7-13-12

First off, this venue is fantastic. Nice mid-sized place with a big stage and a secondary level and bar. The sound is good and the bouncers kept off to the side and didn’t brutalize anyone. This is a great place for hardcore shows and I hope to go back soon. I had not thought about The Ducky Boys in many years and and was surprised to see that they were still around and putting out records. They are definitely not my thing, but that is cool they have stuck around. After they played I wandered outside and ran into a…

Pushead Top 100 Podcast Part One

Here’s the idea: Instead of doing regular Signifying Nothing podcasts this summer, I thought a cool idea would be to do podcasts chronicling the famous Top 100 Records of the Eighties that Pushead did many years ago. If people like this, I’d love to try it with various specific record labels too. Twenty songs for each. I think this will be cool.
