A Death In The Family, American Nightmare, Good Clean Fun, Spark Lights The Friction, The Hope Conspiracy
This show was on Easter and didn’t get a great turn out. I mostly went to see the first, and only, I think, show for A Death In The Family. A friend of mine was in that band. Members had also been in 97a, Kurbjaw, and some others. This was one of the three or four times American Nightmare played NJ before they really blew up. I don’t even remember watching them, nor did I watch any of the other bands. I mostly remember this show for a long discussion I had after it with a friend in the parking…

A Death In The Family, American Nightmare, Good Clean Fun, Spark Lights The Friction, The Hope Conspiracy
I only went to this show to see A Death In The Family, which my friend Chris played in along with former members of 97a and some others. They did a demo that is pretty good. I don’t remember any of the other bands. This might have been American Nightmare’s first show in New Jersey. Like Bane, it took awhile for people to get into them, but once they did the band absolutely took off. I saw them 3-4 to minimal crowds, but then they got so big. My biggest memory from this show was hanging out with a friend…

My first show of 1997 was in Bordentown, NJ at the Fieldsboro VFW (which apparently doesn’t exist anymore?). When I began teaching at BCC in 2009, I noticed I drove near Bordentown every day on my commute and it always made me think of the shows I went to at this venue (Also, Vincenttown. Do the punks still slam there?). I missed the two other Floorpunch shows here (one with Rain On The Parade and Vision, and the other with Human Remains and Earth Crisis). I went to this show with a bunch of friends, two of which, John Piorkowski…

A Death In The Family, Dave Brubeck
hardcore-ufos: “Take 5,” may get all the fame from cool jazz standard Time Out, but it’s the closing track, “Pick Up Sticks,” that shows Brubeck at the top of his ivory tickling game. It’s a piece that succeeds on its contradictions. Joe Morello and Eugene Wright’s rhythm section is simultaneously deep in the pocket yet very prevalent in the mix, Paul Desmond’s sax solo is relaxed but never shy, and D.B.’s solo feels both dissonant and confrontational, yet consonant and beautifully harmonic. His improvisatory ability may never be better exemplified then in those last two minutes; with each chord change he…

Weapon X was a band who only played one show at the Manville Elks Lodge on August 9th 1997. Members of Weapon X have also been in Ensign, Vision, The Purpose, Black Turns Green, Kurbjaw, A Death In The Family, and some others. I remember the week before Floorpunch, Vision, and 25 Ta Life played the same venue. In fact, Manville would be a consistent venue for a few years after this. Sometimes I really miss the place. It was easy to get to (go around the circle, go up six lights, make a left!), the people who ran it seemed to be really cool, and I always knew no matter what show I…
