Ekulu, Fence Cutter, Floorpunch, Hardware Fanzine, Shark Attack, Stag Party
I missed the opener because I was outside catching up with a lot of friends. Stag Party not only has members I went to college with, but also to high school with! Neat. Ekulu is a band I just cannot get into at all. Every song feels like it is a minute too long and something is just….off. No one seems to agree with me about this though. Shark Attack, with some lineup changes, were really good and busted out a new cover of “Bloodstains” even. Floorpunch were solid as always. They are so tight these days. Porter alluded to…

Hardware Fanzine, Infest, Iron Lung, One Life Crew, Pure Disgust, Scapegoat
This gig was definitely overshadowed a bit by the recent presidential election, which featured two of the most repugnant human beings I have ever encountered. Seeing people from the hardcore scene cheer on either of them makes my skin crawl. Infest however stepped up and absolutely tore the house down. John and I headed out to this show after he met up with me where I live now. We caught up on the way. It was nice to be with him in such disturbing times. He has the same vicious, cynical, unrelenting humor that I do. We always felt a…

Boiling Point Fanzine, Down In Flames, Half Off, Hardware Fanzine, Mouthpiece, Rain On The Parade, Striking Distance, Teamwork Records, Time Flies
This was a long day! In the fall of 2000 I had three classes in the early afternoon up in Toms River: Gender Studies at 1200, Statistics at 1300, and then Biology at 1400. We had lab on Friday so my partner and I hurried through our lab stuff and I drove back down to Manahawkin to pick everyone up for the show. We then drove ALL the way up to Wayne, which is at least a two hour drive. I remember it was freezing cold and occasionally snowing as we drove up to the show. In the rush to…

25 Ta Life, Assimilation Or Oblivion Fanzine, Commin Correct, E-Town Concrete, Fastbreak, h2o, Hardware Fanzine, Mouthpiece, Tied Down
This was a big end of summer show in Red Bank. I remember Tied Down playing, but they may have switched their name to Prospect by then? I think Rich might have organized this show even? There was a flyer for sure, but I do not seem to have it. Commin Correct definitely played this show. I had interviewed Rick earlier in the summer and this show served as the debut for my first fanzine Assimilation Or Oblivion. I began wanting to interview Mouthpiece, Hardware Fanzine, and Fastbreak, and ended up with h2o (that a friend did) and 25 Ta…

97a, Adventures In Immortality, Bleed, Elements Of Need, Hardware Fanzine, Judge, Knotwork, Still Life
This was the last show at this VFW Hall. It got shut down early and one of the people who did the show got on the mic and really ripped into the people from the VFW Hall. It was awesome to have shows be ten minutes away that summer, but oh well. Elements of Need were a local emo band, I think? I think Knotwork canceled this show. I wish I could remember Bleed because they were pretty good! Adventures In Immortality came back on their tour and played again. They looked happy to see some familiar faces when we…

Brett Beach, David Koenig, Hardware Fanzine
This was the letter that Dave K sent me with a pile of issues of Hardware #8 (?). When this came I was just about to go on vacation and I read the whole thing twice on the way up and then back home again. I got to know Dave K really well around that time and we talked on the phone a few times. We finally met in person in January of 1997 at Fieldsboro. I knew when I saw his Star Trek Deep Space Nine hat that I had a friend for life.

XClaim! were an Australian band in the mid to late nineties. I was very friendly with their vocalist Craig, who also did Talk Is Cheap and Edge Of Quarrel Fanzines. I did this interview with Craig over AOL Instant Messenger in April of 1998. We reference a tape compilation that we were trying to put together at the time. I will make a separate post to discuss that. BW: Who is all in XClaim! Craig: Terrific opening question Billy…but since you live in youth crew central, that being New Jersey for you slower people, I’ll answer this one. XClaim! is…

Collapse Records, Full Speed Ahead, Hardware Fanzine, Splitting Headache, Suicidal Tendencies, Tear It Up
Splitting Headache S/T EP Collapse Records Splitting Headache are a great new band from the shore featuring members of Tear It Up and Full Speed Ahead. If you like those bands, you will love Splitting Headache as this is a continuation of what was previously established in those bands. I especially dig the multiple lifted Suicidal Tendencies riffs in School Of Life Drop Out. Once these guys have another record out I think people are really going to take note because having heard some newer material I have to say it is an even stronger statement than this record. I…

This is the interview I did with Rain On The Parade in April of 1997. Originally in What Was Said Fanzine. 1. Okay, who is in the band and all that crap? My name is Ronnie and I sing. DII plays one guitar. Justin plays the other. Matt jumps around with his bass. Chris just joined the band. He plays drums. 2. Have you guys gotten any shit for the lyrics to Body Bag? You know, with the way all this metal slop has taken over hardcore in the past few years, you’d think we’d catch some slack for writing…

Life’s A Rape Fanzine #1 & #2 If you’re scratching your head about the name, so was I until I realized it from an M.D.C. song. Life’s A Rape is a promising new fanzine from the San Diego area. A lot of the things that make a great fanzine are here: cut and paste, DIY styled layouts, a lot of photos, and interesting writing. Between the two issues there are interviews with Hatred Surge, Life Crisis, Fucked Up, Hard Skin and (ugh) P. C. Death Squad. There are also some cool Cleveland hardcore stories and a reprint of an old…
