Winter Reviews

Innumerable Forms Frozen To Death Tape Chris Corry and DFJ’s death metal project put out a seven inch a few years back, but this tape shows a lot of progression. The tape has two new songs and the three songs from their previous ep remixed for this new release. I am not so sure how many copies of this tape were made, but track it down if you enjoyed their seven inch. Confined Demo 2012 Pretty generic hardcore somewhere, I am not sure which is more of an influence, between Chain of Strength influenced bands like Champion and Count Me…

Summer Reviews

Things have been slow around here lately. Some of it is lack of motivation, a lot of that stems from a decent downswing in readers/listeners, but also in content. I have not had a lot to say lately for some reasons that, maybe, I will write about sometime. *** Real Cops Demo Excellent NJHC that reminds me of bands like Full Speed Ahead and Tear It Up (who members of this band were in). I see a lot of potential here. *** Sucked Dry Demo Wow, another band that sounds like Cold Sweat is a big influence on them. Obviously, other bands like Crossed Out and Rorschach are also big influences. I…

Show Review: Ceremony-Citizens Arrest-Leather

Now that I live in Mount Holly, Philadelphia is a 30 minute drive away. So that means I will be at shows there a lot more in the future. This was a great example: I left my apartment at 7:30 and was home by 10:30 (well, 10:45 after a trip to Wawa). I have been meaning to catch Citizens Arrest at one of their reunion shows and just haven’t gotten around to it until now. I enjoyed their reunion record (vinyl now available on Painkiller Records) and looked forward to checking them out here. They were playing with Ceremony, who…

November 2011 Reviews

Sick Fucking O Demo Members of Voorhees are back with a new band that sounds like…Voorhees. Obviously, not as classic as Spilling Blood Without Reason, but good angry 82 era hardcore that will be enjoyed by fans of Voorhees for sure. Cool Devo cover at the end. Defile Demo 2010 Fast, angry, hardcore somewhere between midwestern style and power violence. I bet live you can hear a bit of Rorschach in their sound too. I’d like to hear more. Slowburn Demo Members of a variety of NJHC bands including Spirit, Vision, and Floorpunch playing melodic, Turning Point, style hardcore. This…

Reviews For The Week Of August 1st

Full Speed Ahead at their reunion show a few months ago. I didn’t even know this happened until I saw the video on YouTube… Boston Strangler Demo Somewhere between Impact Unit and SSD (aka sounds like Fit For Abuse!) comes Boston Strangler. A quick five track demo of ugly 82 hardcore. More soon? Gone But Not Forgotten Seattle Crew Demo Hey, this is pretty good! Somewhere near Confront and Floorpunch, this demo is good Straight Edge hardcore complete with hooded edgeman on the cover. Negative Approach Friends Of No One 7″ Taang Records What is with the cover? A cartoonish…

Reviews For The Week Of July 25th

Mind Eraser at some Scion sponsored gig. I giggled at how DFJ bums out the bouncers. Blessed Offal Self Titled Tape Death metal coming highly recommended by friends who dig this stuff. While a few songs go on forever, Blessed Offal keeps them interesting with enough changes of pace to not lose me. This is pretty good. United Youth Demo Decent 88 style hardcore that goes by in the blink of an eye. I see a lot of potential for an ep. Keep going. Vaccine Crimes In Blood 5″ Painkiller Records I am glad this is a 5″ because there…

Reviews For The Week of July 18th

Talk Is Poison…one of the best bands of the past 15 years… State of Alert No Policy Bootleg LP This is a pretty complete bootleg LP with all of State of Alert’s recorded material. The No Policy 7” on Dischord, the tracks from Flex Your Head, two demos, and a live set. I’ve heard all of this before, but completeists will dig having all of this in one place. Why hasn’t Dischord done a discography for them already?   Various Artists Brutal Supremacy Compilation Double 7″ Painkiller Records The long awaited debut compilation from Painkiller Records does not let down. Mind Eraser and Scapegoat continue to plow through their…

Iron Age-The Way Is Narrow

Iron Age The Way Is Narrow EP Painkiller Records Iron Age, featuring former members of Far From Breaking and Desperate Measures, continue to put out excellent metallic hardcore similar to Leeway, The Icemen, and early Metallica. Side A is a new song that evolves further from their debut LP, getting heavier and more urgent like Leeway. Side B is a fantastic cover of Flower Travellin Band’s song Satori Part One. That was a nice surprise and very well done.

Hatred Surge-Isolated Human

Hatred Surge Isolated Human EP Painkiller Records Until about a year ago, I wasn’t too familiar with this band. I am, however, very impressed with what I am hearing from them. Hatred Surge have duel male-female vocals that trade off similarly to bands like Antischism and Nausea. Musically, I hear a very heavy influence from His Hero Is Gone, Cop Out, and other bands from that era alongside the above mentioned bands and others like Neurosis and Discharge. This is one of the best records I have heard in awhile.
