May Reviews

Siamese Twins Demo More Nu-Shoegazer stuff from this band. I seem to be checking out a lot of these bands lately. This six song demo is pretty good, but not something that is really drawing my attention that much. I’m not a big fan of Catherine Wheel and that, along with a bit of Lush, is what this demo reminds me of. There are some elements of The Cure or Sisters of Mercy immersed in their sound as well, which is a little different but nevertheless not really my thing. Big shoegazer fans will want to check this out. Outlast New Jersey…

Reviews For The Week of July 18th

Talk Is Poison…one of the best bands of the past 15 years… State of Alert No Policy Bootleg LP This is a pretty complete bootleg LP with all of State of Alert’s recorded material. The No Policy 7” on Dischord, the tracks from Flex Your Head, two demos, and a live set. I’ve heard all of this before, but completeists will dig having all of this in one place. Why hasn’t Dischord done a discography for them already?   Various Artists Brutal Supremacy Compilation Double 7″ Painkiller Records The long awaited debut compilation from Painkiller Records does not let down. Mind Eraser and Scapegoat continue to plow through their…

Pushead Top 100 Podcast Part One

Here’s the idea: Instead of doing regular Signifying Nothing podcasts this summer, I thought a cool idea would be to do podcasts chronicling the famous Top 100 Records of the Eighties that Pushead did many years ago. If people like this, I’d love to try it with various specific record labels too. Twenty songs for each. I think this will be cool. Discharge-War’s No Fairy Tale Society System DeControl-Get It Away Subhumans-Parasites Minor Threat-Bottled Violence Bad Brains-The Regulator True Sounds of Liberty-Abolish Government/Silent Majority Disorder-Violent Crime Rudimentary Peni-Black President Jerry’s Kids-Raise The Curtain Anti Sect-Channel Zero Reality Gism-Death, Agonies, &…

Government Warning-Arrested

Government Warning Arrested 7” Grave Mistake Records Government Warning have been one of the best bands of the past five years. Featuring members of Direct Control, they play fast California hardcore similar to TSOL, Adolescents, and Battalion of Saints. A few songs on here are heavy and melodic, reminding me a lot of the first Adolescents record. Other songs are faster, straight forward hardcore. This is an excellent record and a great introduction to the band for people who haven’t heard them. Still available from Grave Mistake Records.

This Week’s Memo

One of my students pointed this out the other day: our War-Pig-In-Chief Barack Obama continues the wars of the previous administration (and seems to be moving them to Pakistan as well). So much for “change,” suckers. My student then commented sarcastically, “boy, isn’t it great that there are monthly protests in Washington to end the war since Obama got in?” Oh. Whoops. Yeah. Funny how that all stopped once Bush was out of office. Democrats are just as pathetic as Republicans. The only reason anyone marches now is when Jon Stewart commands it. How pathetic. Monsanto, Coca Cola, Microsoft, and Blackwater…

Guinea Kid-Demo

Guinea Kid Demo Indiana band who reminds me a bit of the Adolescents or early Bad Religion. There is some modern chunky mosh parts that deviate a bit from the norm. Whether this is good or bad is really up to you. I enjoyed this demo, but it is definitely not my favorite style outside of some of the classic, canonical, bands like, for example, the Adolescents. Check this one out if any of that interests you.

Career Suicide-Signals

Career Suicide Signals EP Slasher Records Career Suicide, much like their Canadian contemporaries Fucked Up, have never really captured my attention. I enjoyed them when I saw live a few years ago, but their records don’t really grab me. They are a good band; I am reminded of The Circle Jerks, Adolescents, and Weirdos when I listen to them. I just don’t see myself listening to this all that often.
