In The Blink Of An Eye Fanzine #2: The Reviews

These were the reviews from In The Blink Of An Eye Fanzine #2 (#1 was a brief one pager that a few of these reviews appeared in originally). After a few issues of What Was Said, I switched names and tried pretty unsuccessfully to reboot the fanzine. A lot of the same problems that plagued WWS were all over this one too. This came out in the summer of 1998. I am thinking late in the month of August perhaps? I did not do another fanzine for about eight months before the first issue of Parade Brigade Fanzine came together.…

November 2011 Reviews

Sick Fucking O Demo Members of Voorhees are back with a new band that sounds like…Voorhees. Obviously, not as classic as Spilling Blood Without Reason, but good angry 82 era hardcore that will be enjoyed by fans of Voorhees for sure. Cool Devo cover at the end. Defile Demo 2010 Fast, angry, hardcore somewhere between midwestern style and power violence. I bet live you can hear a bit of Rorschach in their sound too. I’d like to hear more. Slowburn Demo Members of a variety of NJHC bands including Spirit, Vision, and Floorpunch playing melodic, Turning Point, style hardcore. This…

Reviews For The Week of August 15th

A 1965 performance of Naima by John Coltrane.   Antidote Thou Shalt Not Kill 7″ Bridge 9 Records Along with Infest, when I got into hardcore there wasn’t another band talked about in such mysterious and hushed tones as Antidote. The record was expensive, but the music was great. There was a bootleg 12″ of it with other early NYC eps (Cause For Alarm, The Abused and either The Mob or Urban Waste), but for most people, this was a record to get on tape, which I had a really nice dub from a virtually mint copy in 1997. Obviously,…

Reviews For The Week Of August 8th

I don’t need to explain this one. Bad Brains 171A Sessions 7″ Has anyone else noticed that a lot of Bad Brains demos are popping up the past few years? These are three versions of songs you probably know, but heavier than say the Black Dots session. A live, horrible, reggae song ends the record. Not really that essential. Waste Management Tape Members of Mind Eraser, etc doing really ILL Boston 82 hardcore ala SSD. The best part about this one is the pleading, furious, Springa style vocals. One of the best bands going today. There is a live set…

Loud & Clear-Self Titled

Loud & Clear Self Titled LP Powered Records Loud & Clear are a new band with members of Dead Stop & Justice. Not surprisingly based on their namesake, Loud & Clear remind me a lot of The Abused and later 1980’s Straight Edge hardcore like Youth of Today and Brotherhood. Incidentally this also reminds me a bit of the XClaim! demo I helped distribute/put out back in the late nineties. In an era of slick youth crew bands with absolutely no substance this record is pretty raw sounding. This record is exactly what this genre should be sounding like in…

Guns N Rosa Parks-Antifreeze

Guns N Rosa Parks Antifreeze EP This Colorado band plays excellent early 80’s style hardcore. I am reminded of bands like Adrenalin OD and The Abused when I listen to this. There are plenty of mosh parts also to keep the pit going. These guys also do New Jersey proud by ending their record with a cover of Sock Woman. 17 songs gives you plenty to listen to and it doesn’t let up for the entire record. Definitely check this out! Hardware Media has also reviewed this record recently!

Fit For Abuse

This interview was originally in Parade Brigade #3. Thanks to Scooter Kane for originally hooking me up with Matt Kelly to do this. * What is going on with Fit For Abuse? I heard you are doing a record with My War Records? We’re starting the recording process on Wednesday March 7th, which will be released on My War Records, yeah. It’ll be a 12” 45 rpm type thing with about fourteen songs (none of which were on the 7”). We’ll probably end up finishing up in late April or early May when Pat and I get back from tour.…
