I did this interview with The Judas Iscariot for Parade Brigade Fanzine #1. At the time these guys were a pretty interesting band on the scene so I checked them out live. Wait In Vain Demo 2005 This is a new band for members of Champion and Trial that does not deviate too far from those bands. Energetic, slightly metallic, hardcore with way too much chugga chug and scratchy New Age Records, circa 1994, style vocals. The stop and go parts remind me of, of all bands, Sparkmarker. If you like Trial or Champion you will like this probably. I will pass on this one. V/A Public Safety Compilation Maximum Rock N Roll Records For a substantial period of time this record has been hyped to death. At one point there seemed to be some mystery about who exactly was even going to be on the compilation. The long wait wasn’t really worth it for me. This isn’t a bad compilation necessarily; there are some great bands like Direct Control, Nightmare, and Signal Lost. Most of the bands don’t really seem to bring their A-Game however. Tragedy Nerve Damage LP Tragedy Records This has been the most anticipated hardcore to come out in a long time. Within minutes of this thing leaking on the net it seems that every hardcore in the world had listened to it ten times and was posting about it on message boards, blogs, and elsewhere. What can be said about Tragedy? They are, by far, the best band in hardcore right now. Nerve Damage, after many listens, feels like it fits somewhere in the middle of Tragedy’s releases. Ringworm Justice Replaced By Revenge CD Victory Records After being disappointed by the last few Ringworm releases, I went to listen to Justice Replaced By Revenge with a bit of apprehension. Their demo and The Promise are classic and essential hardcore records. Nothing they have done has come close since. This record is a step back to the right direction however. The classic Ringworm style is here, albeit a bit updated. There is, at times, too much double bass and chugga style that ruins so many newer hardcore bands. Pearls & Brass The Indian Tower CD Drag City Records I wasn’t sure what to expect from this Pennsylvania band. I was pretty into what I am hearing though. Pearls & Brass remind me a lot of early Soundgarden or a band like Saint Vitus. One of my friends said Cream and Mountain are good reference points as well. No matter what, this is good, heavy stuff with some great riffs. I wouldn’t necessarily run out and buy this if you’re on a budget like I am, but check it out if that sounds like your kind of thing.
Born/Dead Endless War…Repetition CD Prank Records I wasn’t that familiar with Born/Dead before Prank sent this CD in. This Oakland band play raging crusty hardcore somewhat similar to Deathreat, Midnight, and other bands of that nature. Born/Dead aren’t quite as good as Deathreat but I enjoyed listening to this CD, which collects a few different records including a split with Consume. There is also a pretty awesome Necros cover on here. I would check this one out.
