The First Step-What We Know

The First Step What We Know LP Rivalry Records I’ve always been pretty lukewarm towards The First Step. Live I have always enjoyed them but on record they are pretty flat sounding. Maybe it is my growing boredom with this style? Well, much like Tragedy last week, this is a record that has been hyped to death. Add that to the fact that Wally from Gorilla Biscuits produced it has left the kids salivating for this one. Well, Wally producing a record does nothing for because that dude hasn’t done anything I like since about 1990 or so. Doesn’t he…

Skitsystem-Stigmata

Skitsystem Stigmata LP Havoc Records Skitsystem are a good band from Sweden who play “epic” crusty hardcore ala Wolfbrigade, Tragedy, etc. Stigmata is a great record, but I have to say it is a bit long. I have no attention span lately so I really have to concentrate to make it through this one. I think this would be a lot better split up as two separate records instead of one long full length. I would still recommend this.

Jello Biafra & The Melvins-Seig Howdy

Jello Biafra & The Melvins Seig Howdy CD Alternative Tentacles Records After being pleasantly surprised by their debut CD last year, I have to say this follow up is a bit of a disappointment. While still funneled through a Melvins style sound meeting something like Bl’ast! Many of the song on this record are kind of crappy. They drag on forever and honestly would work a lot better as two songs split in half. I do like Those Dumb Punk Kids Will Buy Anything. I think there is something to be said for simplicity, and if this collaboration cut their…

The Geeks-What’s Inside

The Geeks What’s Inside CD Townhall Records The Geeks are a pleasant surprise! This Korean play excellent straight edge hardcore in the vein of Sportswear, Mainstrike, Mouthpiece, and later Bold. I am totally burnt out on this style but these guys are great. If you like this kind of thing definitely pick this one up! I don’t know what else to say; it’s good go get it.

Knockdown-S/T

Knockdown Self Titled CD Youngblood Records This is the discography of this short lived band. Members of this band have also been in Blacklisted, Inside Fight, Shark Attack, and Full Contact among others. Knockdown play 1997 style youth crew hardcore in the vein of Floorpunch. For real this time. So many bands get compared to Floorpunch and maybe one in twenty actually sound like them: these guys do.

I Object-Teaching Revenge

I Object Teaching Revenge CD Alternative Tentacles Records Wow! I Object are a great new band on Alternative Tentacles who play homage to old harDCore. I hear a lot of SOA, The Untouchables, and Minor Threat here. If I would’ve been told this was an unreleased tape from the Flex Your Head era I wouldn’t have thought twice. I am also very pleased by the lyrics on this one, especially Like A Billboard.
