I don’t need to explain this one. Bad Brains 171A Sessions 7″ Has anyone else noticed that a lot of Bad Brains demos are popping up the past few years? These are three versions of songs you probably know, but heavier than say the Black Dots session. A live, horrible, reggae song ends the record. Not really that essential. Waste Management Tape Members of Mind Eraser, etc doing really ILL Boston 82 hardcore ala SSD. The best part about this one is the pleading, furious, Springa style vocals. One of the best bands going today. There is a live set…

Full Speed Ahead at their reunion show a few months ago. I didn’t even know this happened until I saw the video on YouTube… Boston Strangler Demo Somewhere between Impact Unit and SSD (aka sounds like Fit For Abuse!) comes Boston Strangler. A quick five track demo of ugly 82 hardcore. More soon? Gone But Not Forgotten Seattle Crew Demo Hey, this is pretty good! Somewhere near Confront and Floorpunch, this demo is good Straight Edge hardcore complete with hooded edgeman on the cover. Negative Approach Friends Of No One 7″ Taang Records What is with the cover? A cartoonish…

Mind Eraser at some Scion sponsored gig. I giggled at how DFJ bums out the bouncers. Blessed Offal Self Titled Tape Death metal coming highly recommended by friends who dig this stuff. While a few songs go on forever, Blessed Offal keeps them interesting with enough changes of pace to not lose me. This is pretty good. United Youth Demo Decent 88 style hardcore that goes by in the blink of an eye. I see a lot of potential for an ep. Keep going. Vaccine Crimes In Blood 5″ Painkiller Records I am glad this is a 5″ because there…

Talk Is Poison…one of the best bands of the past 15 years… State of Alert No Policy Bootleg LP This is a pretty complete bootleg LP with all of State of Alert’s recorded material. The No Policy 7” on Dischord, the tracks from Flex Your Head, two demos, and a live set. I’ve heard all of this before, but completeists will dig having all of this in one place. Why hasn’t Dischord done a discography for them already? Various Artists Brutal Supremacy Compilation Double 7″ Painkiller Records The long awaited debut compilation from Painkiller Records does not let down. Mind Eraser and Scapegoat continue to plow through their…

Antidote, Black Army Jacket, Black Flag, Full Speed Ahead, Hail Mary, Human Remains, Spazz, Youth Brigade
Full Speed Ahead was the band that Manahawkin really adapted as our own. We first saw them in the early summer of 1997. They opened a show for Spazz along with Hail Mary, Black Army Jacket, and some others. We wanted to check out FSA because they were listed as being “ex members of Human Remains.” Expecting something pretty metallic, we got straight forward, 1982 style, hardcore years ahead of the turn away from 1988 style youth crew hardcore. I remember a few of us bumming out a lot of the emos in the crowd by moshing hard during their…

Here’s the idea: Instead of doing regular Signifying Nothing podcasts this summer, I thought a cool idea would be to do podcasts chronicling the famous Top 100 Records of the Eighties that Pushead did many years ago. If people like this, I’d love to try it with various specific record labels too. Twenty songs for each. I think this will be cool. Capitalist Casualties, Man Is The Bastard, Organized Sports
Organized Sports Hogtied Demo and 7″ I didn’t know dudes from Alberta could play this hard. Anyway, I’ll tackle the seven inch first. Six songs in seven minutes=rad! The production on the demo is a bit rough for me. The seven inch however is nice! Very fast, very rough. Many people would lump them into the fastcore/ powerviolence type scene, but this is just good hardcore to me. For some reason it reminds me of Man is the Bastard or maybe even the Capitalist Casualties? As for the demo-it’s wayyyy less polished. Sounds like it was recorded on a one track boombox…

Crude, La Familia Records
Crude Corner LP La Familia Records I’m not a huge fan of Crude, but this record feels like a big step backwards. A few of these songs on the three way split they did a few years ago with significantly better recordings. This is very lo-fi, and doesn’t really work for them. Not their best material.
