Title Fight-Get Real-Night Birds-Full Speed Ahead-Stick Together-The Little Rascals-Blind Justice-Heavy Chains-Krust-Stag Party @ Howell NJ 6-28-14

When Bob Shedd puts on a gig, you know it is going to be good. Full Speed Ahead are playing a few shows this summer. I missed their last reunion gig in 2006 (?), so I knew I had to head out to this show. This was also my first gig of the year. One of the great things about living in Mount Holly is the commute. To either of our main campuses, it is basically 15 minutes each way. This is great during the school year; many of my colleagues have very short drives to one campus and then…

In The Blink Of An Eye Fanzine #2: The Reviews

These were the reviews from In The Blink Of An Eye Fanzine #2 (#1 was a brief one pager that a few of these reviews appeared in originally). After a few issues of What Was Said, I switched names and tried pretty unsuccessfully to reboot the fanzine. A lot of the same problems that plagued WWS were all over this one too. This came out in the summer of 1998. I am thinking late in the month of August perhaps? I did not do another fanzine for about eight months before the first issue of Parade Brigade Fanzine came together.…

Lifetime-Endeavor at Melody Bar in New Brunswick, NJ 11-22-97

I was never a big Lifetime fan for a few reasons. First, certain members of this band were pretty much straight up assholes and I was always pretty turned off by them. Second, a friend of ours growing up used to use Lifetime songs to emote his gross romantic obsessions with a few lady friends of ours. Eww. Nonetheless, I drove up with some friends and then met up with a few other friends of mine at one of their parents house and we were off to New Brunswick. Lifetime played two sets because so many people showed up. I…

Parade Brigade Fanzine #1: The Reviews

We put out Parade Brigade Fanzine #1 in the spring of 1999. I have no idea what show we released it for, but I think it was at Manville Elks Lodge. Maybe. Amendment 18 Demo This band has members of a number of bands (Insted, Chorus Of Disapproval, Outspoken, etc) I had different expectations for this demo expecting more moshy stuff, but I got straight forward hardcore with interesting breakdowns. Lyrically, this isn’t as “militant,” as xChorusx was, but good all around especially “Eulogy.” I look forward to more. BW Bane Holding This Moment Equal Vision Records Bane sort of…

The Business-War Zone-Blanks 77-Cause For Alarm-Blood For Blood @ Wetlands In New York City NY 3-2-97

This was, I think, the first time I went to a show in New York City. I went with a few of the local skinheads, this girl Jessica and her boyfriend Chris, and I think someone else tagged along. They wanted to see The Business; I really wanted to see War Zone. After the hour and a half or so drive from the shore, we met up with some of their friends and a few of mine, who informed us that War Zone were filiming a video at the show (see above). I remember standing on line for a long…

Reviews For The Week Of August 1st

Full Speed Ahead at their reunion show a few months ago. I didn’t even know this happened until I saw the video on YouTube… Boston Strangler Demo Somewhere between Impact Unit and SSD (aka sounds like Fit For Abuse!) comes Boston Strangler. A quick five track demo of ugly 82 hardcore. More soon? Gone But Not Forgotten Seattle Crew Demo Hey, this is pretty good! Somewhere near Confront and Floorpunch, this demo is good Straight Edge hardcore complete with hooded edgeman on the cover. Negative Approach Friends Of No One 7″ Taang Records What is with the cover? A cartoonish…

At The Cost Of An Animal

A few weeks back, someone asked for stories about how people came to become vegetarians. As many people might know, I stopped eating meat a few years before I got fully involved with hardcore. I often tell a story about refusing to eat for a week because no one believed me (it still seems so strange to me that people think it is WEIRD not to eat meat) and another one about standing up to my parents on one of the, mercifully, few vacations we ever went on. The seeds of this came a little bit before that. If you’ll…

Mental/Mind Eraser/Get Real/Robot Whales/Little Rascals

Mental/Mind Eraser/Get Real/Robot Whales/Little Rascals May 6th 2005 Brick NJ Dave Flynn and I headed up to Brick for this one. We almost bailed upon finding out that Mind Eraser had canceled, but I am glad we still made the trip. Since it was just the two of us, we took my truck to its first hardcore show in a few years. At this point Dave usually drives so it was actually somewhat cool to drive for once. After dealing with the pouring rain, some crappy directions, and a trip to the mighty Santosa’s for vegan Chinese food, we finally…

Ten Yard Fight

I interviewed Clevo from the band Ten Yard Fight in May of 1998 for my old fanzine Broken Behind This Wall. * How did you end up in Ten Yard Fight? That’s a good question. It all started in the summer of 1995. I had gotten out of the Army the summer before and my life just kind of sucked. I had a lot of personal problems and I needed a change. I got back into Straight Edge when I got out of the Army and I started going to shows again now that I had a lot more freedom…
