Automatic, Breakdown, By The Grace Of God, Ensign, Finish Line Fanzine, Game Plan Fanzine, Mincing Words Fanzine, Mouthpiece, Rain On The Parade, Speak 714, Ten Yard Fight
I was going to make it a three day weekened after the Breakdown show the day before with a Ten Yard Fight show in Philadelphia on Sunday, but I busted up my hand real bad at this show. Automatic was a new band with members of Mouthpiece and By The Grace Of God. They played melodic hardcore (ugh). I interviewed them but never printed it because it came out really badly. Rain On The Parade were, uh, Rain On The Parade. Princeton Arts Council had a nice stage, so I remember getting off a bunch of good dives and even…

Battery, Better Than A Thousand, In My Eyes, Speak 714
Honestly, this was a weird show. A few super bullshit things happened. During In My Eyes one of those douchey Boston dudes got all weird with me because I knew the words to their precious new songs. I had gotten an advance CD a few days before and had played it a lot so I could sing along. I kept getting weird looks that screamed “oh my god, someone from outside our crew knows the secret too!” I have no idea what Battery were like, but I packed it up front for Speak 714. Afterwards, I went up to Dan…

These were the reviews from In The Blink Of An Eye Fanzine #2 (#1 was a brief one pager that a few of these reviews appeared in originally). After a few issues of What Was Said, I switched names and tried pretty unsuccessfully to reboot the fanzine. A lot of the same problems that plagued WWS were all over this one too. This came out in the summer of 1998. I am thinking late in the month of August perhaps? I did not do another fanzine for about eight months before the first issue of Parade Brigade Fanzine came together.…

We put out Parade Brigade Fanzine #1 in the spring of 1999. I have no idea what show we released it for, but I think it was at Manville Elks Lodge. Maybe. Amendment 18 Demo This band has members of a number of bands (Insted, Chorus Of Disapproval, Outspoken, etc) I had different expectations for this demo expecting more moshy stuff, but I got straight forward hardcore with interesting breakdowns. Lyrically, this isn’t as “militant,” as xChorusx was, but good all around especially “Eulogy.” I look forward to more. BW Bane Holding This Moment Equal Vision Records Bane sort of…

Battery, Better Than A Thousand, Good Clean Fun, In My Eyes, Revelation Records, Speak 714, The Straight Edge, Youth Of Today
Fresh off working 15 days straight because my burn out boss couldn’t get it together to hire someone else, I headed to Philadelphia to check out the Revelation Records rehash tour heading through America during the summer of 1998. I kind of didn’t like most of these bands, but we wanted to see In My Eyes and interview Dan O Mahoney, so off we went. I remember absolutely nothing about Battery, but I think Good Clean Fun jumped on after them. They had just put out their demo, so the, uh, “joke” was pretty fresh at this point, which would…

Parade Brigade Fanzine #3 advertised that the new issue would have interviews with Out Cold, Nerve Agents, Voices Forming Weapons, Speak 714, and Carry On and it would be out in “May or June”…whoops We ended Parade Brigade Fanzine in the fall of 2001. We did three issues and then a variety of personal, interpersonal, and worldly issues basically put the fanzine to rest. I still swear none of them was 9-11, although I cannot imagine us doing so well in the newly reactionary and jingoistic hardcore scene afterwards. I did a one pager maybe six months later and received…

All three “staff members” did reviews for issue two. BW=Bill Wend, John=John Piorkowski, Ferret=Justin Bragg I got a ton of shit in the weeks before that In My Eyes record came out. I got it in the mail, listened a few times, and posted one morning on the Rev Board that I did not like it. I said it reminded me of Better Than A Thousand and was kind of shitty. I went to class and came back to this huge thread about what a fag/loser/pussy I was. LOL. Oh noes, I didn’t like your precious friend’s band and their…

By 1998 I was really falling out of love with the whole “1997” youth crew revival thing. Also, during this time period, as I entered college I began dealing with my own sexuality in a frank and real way for the first time. I was a late bloomer to say the least. The fall of 1997 and spring/summer of 1998 was filled with three very confusing and frustrating relationships where I dealt directly with a lot of what Dan talks about. I didn’t have the emotional or sexual maturity to really engage with them at the time in any meaningful…

Four years late, here is the final list. One thing I’ve noticed as I put this together is that there is a great lack of compilations on this list. A lot of the decent compilations in the nineties have great songs, but also terrible ones. For the first time in a very long time I drove up to this show with my friend John. We hit a ton of rain on the way up but, thankfully, by the time we got to New York City it was gone besides some lightning. John and I caught up on what each other was up to and laughed at the antics of the world around us. On the way up we listened to Dave K’s 1988-1990 NYHC mix. Upon arriving in Hoboken and trying to find a parking spot for probably around twenty to thirty minutes I quickly…
