Dischord Records, Honor Role, No Way Records, Touch & Go Records
Honor Role 1982 7″ No Way Records This is a reissue of this Virginia band’s demo from 1982. This is a pretty typical record of the period. If you like early Dischord, Touch & Go, etc you’re gonna really like this. I’m glad this got a reissue, I’ve been looking for a good copy of it for years! Profit Prophets is my favorite song here. While it’s no Religious Vomit, it’s a great eighties style anti-religion/televangelist song. There aren’t enough songs about televangelists anymore.

Lifetime Somewhere In The Swamps Of New Jersey CD Jade Tree Records You know, in the year 2006 I just don’t see the use for a band like Lifetime. Listening to this right now just makes me mad: this is bad pop punk that has inspired millions of awful bands since. Bold, Ignite, It's The Limit Records, The Killing Flame, Uniform Choice, Vitality
Vitality! Introspection 7” It’s The Limit Records Pretty melodic hardcore not unlike later Bold, Ignite, or The Killing Flame. The problem with bands like this is that they just keep getting more “rock” sounding with each progressive release. This is already pretty “rock,” although there are some decent Uniform Choice style riffs in a few songs. I don’t really like this, but if you like the above bands you should check this out.

Cloak/Dagger Pinata 7″ Grave Mistake Records This one was a pleasant surprise. Members of Count Me Out and American Nightmare playing indie rock flavored early eighties hardcore. Pinata is equal parts Hot Snakes and Circle Jerks. One of my friends mentioned The Buzzcocks when listening to this band. This record is pretty catchy and interesting; I am sure I will listen to it again. They recently signed to Jade Tree Records.

108 Creation. Sustenance. Destruction. CD Equal Vision Records In 2006 I have pretty mixed feelings about 108. On one hand, I think they were a pretty interesting band who pushed the envelope on what can and can’t be deemed “hardcore.” I also think, listening to this now, that they got a lot better as they went on. Black SS/Raining Bricks Split EP Organized Crime Records After hearing Black SS again I pretty much feel the same way I did previously. These guys are pretty good; they remind me a lot of very early Kill Your Idols. The vocalist sounds a lot like Choke. Yet, I am not really feeling this record. Raining Bricks are very similar. Black SS, Kill Your Idols, Slapshot, Third Party Records
Black SS Self Titled EP Third Party Records Black SS has been hyped a lot lately. Hearing a metal free band from Syracuse is quite refreshing. Black SS play 82 inspired hardcore that reminds me a lot of Slapshot and Kill Your Idols. This is straight forward and a little OI! Influenced (ala Slapshot) at times. Ultimately, while this is pretty good, it doesn’t really grab me. I’m curious to hear more though.

Carry On It’s All Our Blood CD Youngblood Records This is the remastered version of this band’s CD which combines some of their early input. I still don’t see what the big deal is about this band.
