RIP Pig Champion

The recent death of Poison Idea guitarist Pig Champion has hit me pretty hard. Poison Idea were playing hi-speed, brutal hardcore years before a lot of other bands caught on. Their demo, Darby Crash Rides Again, is at least a few years ahead of the curve. Pick Your King, their debut ep, is arguably the best hardcore record ever made. I can’t think of a way to dispute that. As they went on they continued to put out solid record after solid, even experimenting a little bit with melody and heaviness. They peaked with the early nineties LP Feel The…

Rain On The Parade

This is the interview I did with Rain On The Parade in April of 1997. Originally in What Was Said Fanzine. 1. Okay, who is in the band and all that crap? My name is Ronnie and I sing. DII plays one guitar. Justin plays the other. Matt jumps around with his bass. Chris just joined the band. He plays drums. 2. Have you guys gotten any shit for the lyrics to Body Bag? You know, with the way all this metal slop has taken over hardcore in the past few years, you’d think we’d catch some slack for writing…

To What End?-Concealed Below The Surface

To What End? Concealed Below The Surface LP Crimes Against Humanity Records First off-Great name! You immediately grab my attention by naming your band after a Neurosis song. These guys play excellent hardcore inspired by Tragedy, His Hero Is Gone, etc. This is heavy and “epic” sounding with being corny. The male-female vocals work very well for this band, and this style in general. If you like Tragedy you need to check this band out. Members of this band have also been in the excellent Wolfbrigade.

The Elected-Sun, Sun, Sun

The Elected Sun, Sun, Sun CD Sub Pop Records I wasn’t really sure what to do with this one when I received it from Sub Pop. The Elected have members of the band Rilo Kiley, who are apparently a big indie band? I had no idea. Honestly this isn’t half bad. The Elected play folky, almost country, sounding stuff. Some of the songs get pretty loud and remind me of something from the seventies. This record definitely grew on me as I listened to it. If you like this kind of thing check it out.

The Holy Mountain-Entrails

The Holy Mountain Entrails LP No Idea Records I have heard a lot of hype for this band lately. Some people say they sound like Tragedy, others say they are pretty cheesy. While the influence of bands like Tragedy is apparent, Entrails really fails to catch my interest. The attempt at what Tragedy is doing is apparent: this is crusty sounding hardcore but it is so catchy and poppy that any rage it has is totally deflated. There are even segway tracks like Tragedy has. Entrails is too poppy and instead of reminding me of bands like Born Against or…

Anchors Away-Nuckin Futs

Anchors Away Nuckin Futs CD Significant Records Thanks to Significant for sending this one over recently. Anchors Away play pretty atypical modern hardcore. There is a posi youth crew feel to it with a bit too much chugga Hatebreed style breaks and mosh parts for me. I can imagine people kick boxing to this. I have to pass on this one, but if you like this stuff check it out.

Top 100 Of The Eighties: Hated Youth-Hardcore Rules 7″

Hated Youth Hardcore Rules 7” Burrito Records 1983 (Released in 2000) This record was unreleased until 2000. Hated Youth were from Florida in the early eighties. They played thrashy hardcore like a lot of bands of the era. I am reminded of Gang Green, DRI, and The Neos when I listen to this. This is great stuff! Here is an mp3 of Ted Bundy These songs are posted for sample purposes. I post them so that people can be turned on to cool music and hopefully return the favor for someone else. Each mp3 will be up for one week…

Top 100 Of The Eighties: Confuse-Nuclear Addicts Flexi

Confuse Nuclear Addicts Flexi Blue Jag Records 1984 I don’t know much about Confuse, but I do know that this record shreds. Nuclear Addicts has a buzz saw, noisy feeling ala Urban Waste and other bands of that nature. Here is an mp3 of The End. These songs are posted for sample purposes. I post them so that people can be turned on to cool music and hopefully return the favor for someone else. Each mp3 will be up for one week and then will be taken down. please support the bands and labels by buying these records and checking…

Career Suicide-Signals

Career Suicide Signals EP Slasher Records Career Suicide, much like their Canadian contemporaries Fucked Up, have never really captured my attention. I enjoyed them when I saw live a few years ago, but their records don’t really grab me. They are a good band; I am reminded of The Circle Jerks, Adolescents, and Weirdos when I listen to them. I just don’t see myself listening to this all that often.
