Things have been slow around here lately. Some of it is lack of motivation, a lot of that stems from a decent downswing in readers/listeners, but also in content. I have not had a lot to say lately for some reasons that, maybe, I will write about sometime. *** Real Cops Demo Excellent NJHC that reminds me of bands like Full Speed Ahead and Tear It Up (who members of this band were in). I see a lot of potential here. *** Sucked Dry Demo Wow, another band that sounds like Cold Sweat is a big influence on them. Obviously, other bands like Crossed Out and Rorschach are also big influences. I…

25 Ta Life, Bl'ast!, Born Annoying, Brett Beach, Dag Nasty, Get Real, In Effect Fanzine, Kid Dynamite, Kill Your Idols, Ressurection, Supertouch, Tear It Up, Texas Is The Reason, Too Many Voices
I haven’t seen Supertouch since the middle of the nineties or so, so I was pretty excited about seeing them. Especially since it was an all ages show as well. I’ve heard mixed reviews of recent Supertouch gigs, but checking some videos on Youtube made it seem like they were tight and played all the classics people in New Jersey want to hear. After a day of teaching, I went home and ate dinner and then hung out for a few hours before making the hourish trek up to Asbury Park. I missed a few of the openers, including Born…

Black Flag, Collapse Records, Full Speed Ahead, Splitting Headache, Tear It Up
Splitting Headache Night Terrors LP Collapse Records A bunch of friends in this band, so I might be a tad partisan in this review (although that’s never stopped me from shredding records before), but this is one of the better records of the second half of the past decade. Former members of Tear It Up, Full Speed Ahead, and others continue to mature that style, blending it with Damaged era Black Flag to make a highly enjoyable album. I am pretty sure a few members of Splitting Headache live in different parts of the country, so catch them if you…

Bl'ast!, Black Flag, Dave It Up, Ensign, Full Speed Ahead, Human Remains, S.O.V., Tear It Up, The Good Book
The Good Book Demo 2006 This band has apparently already broken up, but this demo fucking rages hard. The Jersey Shore pedigree here is impressive: members have spent time in bands as varied as Ensign, Full Speed Ahead, Human Remains, S.O.V., and Tear It Up. In fact 3/5 of Full Speed Ahead were in this band. The five songs on this CD sound a lot like a median between Tear It Up (where vocalist Dave Ackerman spent time in before this band) and Full Speed Ahead. Fast, right to the point, hardcore in the vein of Bl’ast!, Black Flag and…

Collapse Records, Full Speed Ahead, Hardware Fanzine, Splitting Headache, Suicidal Tendencies, Tear It Up
Splitting Headache S/T EP Collapse Records Splitting Headache are a great new band from the shore featuring members of Tear It Up and Full Speed Ahead. If you like those bands, you will love Splitting Headache as this is a continuation of what was previously established in those bands. I especially dig the multiple lifted Suicidal Tendencies riffs in School Of Life Drop Out. Once these guys have another record out I think people are really going to take note because having heard some newer material I have to say it is an even stronger statement than this record. I…

Parts Unknown Records, Tear It Up, The Gatecrashers
The Gatecrashers …Are A Bunch of Mother Fuckers LP Parts Unknown Records The Gatecrashers are a band I have enjoyed previously but never really paid a ton of attention to. I do remember being amused by their piss take on Break Down The Walls on a previous record. This LP reminds me a lot of New Jersey’s own already classic band Tear It Up. Musically, it is well done but just does not grab me the way that bands like Tear It Up do. If you dig this style, check this record out though.

Cut The Shit, Forward To Death, Full Speed Ahead, Husker Du, Loud Fast Rules, Newz U Can Uze, Soul Asylum, Splitting Headache, Tear It Up, The Replacements
A few news items: Sadly, Karl Mueller, the bassist for the band Soul Asylum, died recently. What does this have to do with hardcore you ask? Well, Karl was in the band Loud Fast Rules; who conveniently enough Something I Learned Today, one of my favorite blogs, just blogged about. Soul Asylum also came out of the same scene that gave us bands like Husker Du and The Replacements. I was very impressed by Splitting Headache’s set this weekend. Featuring ex-members of Full Speed Ahead, Tear It Up, Forward To Death, and Cut The Shit, Splitting Headache plays hardcore not…
