Battery, Get Down, In My Eyes, Piss Mountain Records, Supertouch, Swiz, Ten Yard Fight, Verbal Assault
Get Down Second 7″ Piss Mountain Records After a few years of delay, this record finally came out last year. I have had a tape of it for many years, but I am glad it finally came out officially. Get Down was a short lived band, not surprisingly, reminding me of early Supertouch and bands like Swiz and Verbal Assault. After two seven inches, it seems like this band was starting to get their sound down, so it is unfortunate they didn’t do anything else. Members of Ten Yard Fight, In My Eyes, and Battery. As far as I can tell,…

One of my students pointed this out the other day: our War-Pig-In-Chief Barack Obama continues the wars of the previous administration (and seems to be moving them to Pakistan as well). So much for “change,” suckers. My student then commented sarcastically, “boy, isn’t it great that there are monthly protests in Washington to end the war since Obama got in?” Oh. Whoops. Yeah. Funny how that all stopped once Bush was out of office. Democrats are just as pathetic as Republicans. The only reason anyone marches now is when Jon Stewart commands it. How pathetic. Monsanto, Coca Cola, Microsoft, and Blackwater…

I think, at this point, the podcast is going to be canceled, or, at least, released in a different form than weekly (I’m thinking maybe a longer, monthly, show? Man, I can’t imagine how Al does two hours a week!). Since the show came back for the fall, listenership has been sporadic. This will leave the written portion of Signifying Nothing as the main focus. I have a large backlog of reviews to post, plus some other features I’d like to implement. Let’s see what happens as we experiment with this new format. Hopefully, people care enough to check it…

Citizen's Patrol, No Way Records, Violent Arrest
No Bullshit Volume Four No Way Records The No Bullshit compilation series has offered a great group of bands over the years. The most recent, volume four, edition is a bit of a step down from previous entries in this series, but still has some exceptional tracks. The primary highlights on this edition include Citizen’s Patrol and Violent Arrest. I need to find out more about those bands.

Desperate Measures, Far From Breaking, Flower Travellin Band, Iron Age, Leeway, Metallica, Painkiller Records, The Icemen
Iron Age The Way Is Narrow EP Painkiller Records Iron Age, featuring former members of Far From Breaking and Desperate Measures, continue to put out excellent metallic hardcore similar to Leeway, The Icemen, and early Metallica. Side A is a new song that evolves further from their debut LP, getting heavier and more urgent like Leeway. Side B is a fantastic cover of Flower Travellin Band’s song Satori Part One. That was a nice surprise and very well done.

Antischism, Cop Out, Discharge, Hatred Surge, His Hero Is Gone, Nausea, Neurosis, Painkiller Records
Hatred Surge Isolated Human EP Painkiller Records Until about a year ago, I wasn’t too familiar with this band. I am, however, very impressed with what I am hearing from them. Hatred Surge have duel male-female vocals that trade off similarly to bands like Antischism and Nausea. Musically, I hear a very heavy influence from His Hero Is Gone, Cop Out, and other bands from that era alongside the above mentioned bands and others like Neurosis and Discharge. This is one of the best records I have heard in awhile.

Discharge, Knife Fight, Painkiller Records
Knife Fight Isolated 7″ Painkiller Records One of my favorite bands of the past decade return, taking the Oi! influence of their previous few releases and combining it with a huge Discharge/UK82 influence. This is gnarly, angry hardcore. Definitely a contender for record of the year.

Madball, Mind Eraser, Ringworm, The Rival Mob, xFilesx
The Rival Mob Bitter Rivals Demo 2007 Members of XFilesX, Mind Eraser, and others come together to combine the best parts of early Madball and Ringworm into some brutal contemporary hardcore. Very heavy riffs and great mosh parts. This band has run a bit under my rader, but I am looking into more by them for sure.
