Spazz-Canephora-Full Speed Ahead-Hail Mary at Bates Lodge in Red Bank NJ June 1997

After discovering Infest during the winter of 1996/1997, some of us checked out a lot of faster bands. This lead us deep into the power violence scene, which had some crossover with the more youth crew scene we were accustomed to (97a is a good example of this) checking out. We made our way towards the classics like No Comment and Crossed Out and also gravitated near bands like Rorschach, Capitalist Causalities, Acme, and others. This led to modern bands like Charles Bronson, MK Ultra, and, of course, Spazz. Oddly, there was little internet hype for this tour. I actually…

Vision-Count Me Out at Montclair, NJ Spring 2000

I remember I worked all day and then we drove up to this show, which was quite a hike from Manahawkin. I spent a lot of time hanging out at this show outside, so I have no idea who else played besides Count Me Out. Vision had a new record out, so their set was littered with songs from it plus all the classics like Falling Apart, which you can see above. We must have rolled with two cars of people, because there are a ton of Manahawkin kids at this show. I had not eaten all day, so you…

Negative Approach-DOA at Asbury Lanes in Asbury Park, NJ 6-18-10

I’m somewhere in that video. This show was the night, I think, of what would end up being my last day working in the public school system. Yay! Dave and I met up and I think got there just as DOA started playing. As far as I know, I don’t think I have ever seen them before this, but they were decent and played all the hits like The Prisoner and America The Beautiful. Cool. I packed it up front for Negative Approach and went off, which as you can see from the video above so did the crowd. I…

Poison Idea-Nihilistics-Kill Your Idols Summer 2003 CBGB New York City NY

Before this, I think the last time Poison Idea had been on the east coast was around 1990, so there was a lot of anticipation for this show. A few more bands might have played, but I don’t remember. I remember Kill Your Idols were a hot band in hardcore at the time and I think did the entire tour with Poison Idea (which included a surprise Slapshot set the next day). Nihilistics were absolutely horrible and said some pretty racist stuff on stage about Arabs. That band has like two good songs anyway, so fuck em. I was on…

Underdog at Stone Pony in Asbury Park NJ Summer 2006

Ugh, why did Underdog play this shithole instead of Asbury Lanes? Who knows. Actually, I think I do know! We went up to this one with a crew of friends and Underdog were good, although really hurt by bouncers and a huge barricade. Why do bands that can draw a lot of people accept this bullshit? Or do they care? Underdog were good and we went home to meet up at a friend’s house to hang out. Everyone got pretty drunk and I spent a lot of time sitting outside on the phone with my girlfriend.

Underdog-Cold World-Get Real-My Turn To Win @ Asbury Lanes 7-24-09

I showed up to this show right around when Get Real were wrapping up their set, so I just hung out in the back with some friends after their set and during Cold World’s set. Underdog were kind of shitty at this show I remember. A lot of older dudes were there, drunk, and kind of dancing like assholes. This is the same bullshit that wrecks some Vision shows too. You are so cool to have to dance hard around a bunch of kids half your age. Very courageous, especially after a few beers. Something really funny happened at this…

Better Than A Thousand-Speak 714-In My Eyes-Battery at Melody Bar in New Brunswick, NJ 7-15-98

Honestly, this was a weird show. A few super bullshit things happened. During In My Eyes one of those douchey Boston dudes got all weird with me because I knew the words to their precious new songs. I had gotten an advance CD a few days before and had played it a lot so I could sing along. I kept getting weird looks that screamed “oh my god, someone from outside our crew knows the secret too!” I have no idea what Battery were like, but I packed it up front for Speak 714. Afterwards, I went up to Dan…

In The Blink Of An Eye Fanzine #2: The Reviews

These were the reviews from In The Blink Of An Eye Fanzine #2 (#1 was a brief one pager that a few of these reviews appeared in originally). After a few issues of What Was Said, I switched names and tried pretty unsuccessfully to reboot the fanzine. A lot of the same problems that plagued WWS were all over this one too. This came out in the summer of 1998. I am thinking late in the month of August perhaps? I did not do another fanzine for about eight months before the first issue of Parade Brigade Fanzine came together.…

Madball-Fury Of V-E Town Concrete at Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ 7-14-96

Crystal and I went to this show. Demonstrating My Style had just come out and Madball were one of the best live bands going at the time. I wish I could remember who else played, but I think it was Second To None and Corrupt. A couple of posers from my high school went to this but all hide away from the pit and whatnot. E Town Concrete were totally not my thing, but they always got a crazy reaction. They had a few demos and I think I picked them up and a shirt which I traded a few…

Murphy’s Law-Vision-To Each His Own @ Casino Skate Park In Asbury Park NJ 5-24-98

When I ran into this video on Youtube, I could barely remember this show but could very clearlyv see myself stage diving to both Animosity Overkill and Falling Apart, so I must have been there, right? Then I sort of remembered that this show was with Murphy’s Law and later confirmed it was in the spring of 1998. What is up with the chin beard on me AND floorpunching backwards at one point? Who knows. I remember Murphy’s Law were really good at this show. They stuck to the hits and did not do any bullshit like play dub songs…
