Anti Cimex, Crucifix, Morpheme, Nightmare, Prank Records
Morpheme Self Titled 7″ Prank Records This is one of the best records I have heard in awhile. Scandinavian style hardcore with lyrics in Japanese reminding me of Nightmare, Anti Cimex, and Crucifix amongst others. This style is filled with horrible, derivative, garbage and this band really stands out above the rest. Great stuff worth checking out.

AsbestosDeath, Sleep, Southern Lord Records
AsbestosDeath Dejection Unclean CD Southern Lord Records As you may, or may not, know, this band became the mighty Sleep. While not quite up to the Sleep sound, listeners can hear the beginning developments of their sound on these four, the only they recorded, songs. Not something I will listen to all the time, but a useful artifact telegraphing what would come next.

Art of The Underground Records, Napalm Death, No Comment, Running For Cover
Running For Cover Dark Well LP Art of The Underground Records Released after they broke up, Running For Cover’s LP is just as good as their previously released material. This band reminds me a lot of early Napalm Death and No Comment. Fast hardcore with heavier, slower, parts. If you like this, make sure to track down their seven inch as well.

Black Flag, Dry Rot, Gone, Mind Eraser, Painted Willie, Parts Unknown Records, Saccharine Trust
Dry Rot Philistine LP Parts Unknown Records Dry Rot have been a band who came highly recommended from many friends. Didn’t they tour with Mind Eraser one summer too? Cool. I have enjoyed their many eps in the past, but they never really pulled me in where I would listen to them a lot. That has changed a bit with their new LP on Parts Unknown. Manic hardcore bouncing between power violence and the free jazz influenced style of SST bands like Saccharine Trust (a member of whom played on this record!), Black Flag, Gone, Painted Willie, etc. This is…

Adolescents, Bad Religion, Guinea Kid
Guinea Kid Demo Indiana band who reminds me a bit of the Adolescents or early Bad Religion. There is some modern chunky mosh parts that deviate a bit from the norm. Whether this is good or bad is really up to you. I enjoyed this demo, but it is definitely not my favorite style outside of some of the classic, canonical, bands like, for example, the Adolescents. Check this one out if any of that interests you.

Breathing Fire, Eyehategod, Napalm Death, Painkiller Records, Rorschach, Saint Vitus
Breathing Fire Years of Lead LP Painkiller Records About seven years ago, Breathing Fire’s demo really blew me away. I remember listening to it every day in the fall of 2004 while studying before my evening classes. Brutal, heavy, and very dark hardcore in the vein of bands like Eyehategod and Rorschach. After years of delay, Breathing Fire returned with this LP. The influence of bands like the aforementioned is still very prevalent, but so is other bands like Saint Vitus and Napalm Death. Easily one of the best of the decade.

Staring Problem Demo This is a few years old, but I wanted to get a review in. Former members of Ensign, Tear It Up, Robot Whales, and The Break get together to play Bl’ast!/Corrosion of Conformity inspired hardcore. The songs on this demo are really heavy and burly, reminding me a lot of Animosity era COC. They have a full length record out now on Indecision Records you should check out.
