Devoid Of Faith-Monster X-Hell Child-Dissolve-Human Remains-Malefaction-Unanswered @ Bayville NJ 8-11-95

I ended up meeting a bunch of people I still talk to in 2016 at this show. I had no idea who any of them were at the time, but they are friendships I value to this day. Devoid of Faith and Monster X were gateway bands for me and my friends into a lot of other cool stuff. Hell Child were from Japan. I do not remember a lot about them unfortunately, nor do I remember Dissolve. Human Remains were this incredible metal band from the area. They were pretty influential on a lot of bands that would come…

Floorpunch-Ten Yard Fight-Hands Tied-Fastbreak-Uprise-Bladecrasher-Last Straw-9 Lives at Fieldsboro VFW in Bordentown NJ 1-4-97

My first show of 1997 was in Bordentown, NJ at the Fieldsboro VFW (which apparently doesn’t exist anymore?). When I began teaching at BCC in 2009, I noticed I drove near Bordentown every day on my commute and it always made me think of the shows I went to at this venue (Also, Vincenttown. Do the punks still slam there?). I missed the two other Floorpunch shows here (one with Rain On The Parade and Vision, and the other with Human Remains and Earth Crisis). I went to this show with a bunch of friends, two of which, John Piorkowski…

Full Speed Ahead

Full Speed Ahead was the band that Manahawkin really adapted as our own. We first saw them in the early summer of 1997. They opened a show for Spazz along with Hail Mary, Black Army Jacket, and some others. We wanted to check out FSA because they were listed as being “ex members of Human Remains.” Expecting something pretty metallic, we got straight forward, 1982 style, hardcore years ahead of the turn away from 1988 style youth crew hardcore. I remember a few of us bumming out a lot of the emos in the crowd by moshing hard during their…

Signifying Nothing Top 100 Of The Nineties

Four years late, here is the final list.  One thing I’ve noticed as I put this together is that there is a great lack of compilations on this list.  A lot of the decent compilations in the nineties have great songs, but also terrible ones.  I still feel like I am missing something obvious… 1.6 Band, Self Titled LP, USA, 1992 Acme, Self Titled 7″, Belgium, 1994 All Chrome, Flounders Flyers College & Canada LP, USA, 1999 Arms Reach, Self Titled 7″, Australia, 1998 Assuck, State To State 7″, USA, 1993 Aus-Rotten, Fuck Nazi Sympathy, USA, 1994 Bastard, Wind Of…

The Good Book-Demo 2006

The Good Book Demo 2006 This band has apparently already broken up, but this demo fucking rages hard. The Jersey Shore pedigree here is impressive: members have spent time in bands as varied as Ensign, Full Speed Ahead, Human Remains, S.O.V., and Tear It Up. In fact 3/5 of Full Speed Ahead were in this band. The five songs on this CD sound a lot like a median between Tear It Up (where vocalist Dave Ackerman spent time in before this band) and Full Speed Ahead. Fast, right to the point, hardcore in the vein of Bl’ast!, Black Flag and…

Full Speed Ahead

Back in 1997 a few days after seeing S.O.D. and War Zone on consecutive days, we went to see Spazz play in Red Bank. Our curiosity was peaked by a band called Full Speed Ahead, were advertised on the flyer as having ex members of Human Remains, a band that we really liked. We did not get the type of band that we were expecting to get, but what we heard really impressed us. After getting free demos from the band (they gave them out through mail, how cool is that?) I knew I had to interview them. Not really…
