Things have been slow around here lately. Some of it is lack of motivation, a lot of that stems from a decent downswing in readers/listeners, but also in content. Stick Together Demo This Wilkes-Barre band plays 88 style hardcore that reminds me a lot of Four Walls Falling and Release. Good stuff. Mindless Human Conditioning Tape Despite their name, Mindless are not so kind of Infest worship band (although I call dibs on Human Conditioning as a band name…I dig it). Mindless remind me a bit of His Hero Is Gone, but with some 1990’s power violence influence (Charles Bronson I think?). This is a pretty interesting sound and I would like to hear more from them. So much for “change,” suckers. My student then commented sarcastically, “boy, isn’t it great that there are monthly protests in Washington to end the war since Obama got in?” Oh. Whoops. Yeah. I think, at this point, the podcast is going to be canceled, or, at least, released in a different form than weekly (I’m thinking maybe a longer, monthly, show? Man, I can’t imagine how Al does two hours a week!). Since the show came back for the fall, listenership has been sporadic. This will leave the written portion of Signifying Nothing as the main focus. I have a large backlog of reviews to post, plus some other features I’d like to implement. Hatred Surge Isolated Human EP Painkiller Records Until about a year ago, I wasn’t too familiar with this band. I am, however, very impressed with what I am hearing from them. Hatred Surge have duel male-female vocals that trade off similarly to bands like Antischism and Nausea. Musically, I hear a very heavy influence from His Hero Is Gone, Cop Out, and other bands from that era alongside the above mentioned bands and others like Neurosis and Discharge. This is one of the best records I have heard in awhile.
