Night Birds-Give-Omegas-Altered Boys at Asbury Lanes in Asbury Park, NJ 7-13-13

After spending the afternoon at the shore with my parents and buying my mother a new Nintendo 3DS so she can play Animal Crossing: New Leaf, I went up to Asbury Park to check out an awesome gig at Asbury Lanes. I thought that venue was closing? Whatever happened with that? This was a great gig and I saw three excellent bands. Driving into Asbury Park got a bit complicated. I came down the main road through the city like I always do and was suddenly diverted around a detour. After going a few minutes out of my way, I…

Summer Reviews

Things have been slow around here lately. Some of it is lack of motivation, a lot of that stems from a decent downswing in readers/listeners, but also in content. I have not had a lot to say lately for some reasons that, maybe, I will write about sometime. *** Real Cops Demo Excellent NJHC that reminds me of bands like Full Speed Ahead and Tear It Up (who members of this band were in). I see a lot of potential here. *** Sucked Dry Demo Wow, another band that sounds like Cold Sweat is a big influence on them. Obviously, other bands like Crossed Out and Rorschach are also big influences. I…

November 2011 Reviews

Sick Fucking O Demo Members of Voorhees are back with a new band that sounds like…Voorhees. Obviously, not as classic as Spilling Blood Without Reason, but good angry 82 era hardcore that will be enjoyed by fans of Voorhees for sure. Cool Devo cover at the end. Defile Demo 2010 Fast, angry, hardcore somewhere between midwestern style and power violence. I bet live you can hear a bit of Rorschach in their sound too. I’d like to hear more. Slowburn Demo Members of a variety of NJHC bands including Spirit, Vision, and Floorpunch playing melodic, Turning Point, style hardcore. This…

Government Warning-Arrested

Government Warning Arrested 7” Grave Mistake Records Government Warning have been one of the best bands of the past five years. Featuring members of Direct Control, they play fast California hardcore similar to TSOL, Adolescents, and Battalion of Saints. A few songs on here are heavy and melodic, reminding me a lot of the first Adolescents record. Other songs are faster, straight forward hardcore. This is an excellent record and a great introduction to the band for people who haven’t heard them. Still available from Grave Mistake Records.

Cloak/Dagger-Pinata 7″

Cloak/Dagger Pinata 7″ Grave Mistake Records This one was a pleasant surprise. Members of Count Me Out and American Nightmare playing indie rock flavored early eighties hardcore. Pinata is equal parts Hot Snakes and Circle Jerks. One of my friends mentioned The Buzzcocks when listening to this band. This record is pretty catchy and interesting; I am sure I will listen to it again. They recently signed to Jade Tree Records.
