Wait In Vain-Demo 2005

Wait In Vain Demo 2005 This is a new band for members of Champion and Trial that does not deviate too far from those bands. Energetic, slightly metallic, hardcore with way too much chugga chug and scratchy New Age Records, circa 1994, style vocals. The stop and go parts remind me of, of all bands, Sparkmarker. If you like Trial or Champion you will like this probably. I will pass on this one. This is the kind of stuff I thought bands like Devoid Of Faith and Floorpunch pushed to the side when they came along. The promo sheet that…

Robot Whales-Vehicle

Robot Whales Vehicle LP Collapse Records Last year’s sleeper hit on the Revelation compilation returns with a new LP filled with mid 90’s style hardcore. Like I said last year, these guys sound like a breath of fresh air right now. If you like stuff like Quicksand, Lincoln, Burn, Helmet, and bands like that you will love this. Bonus points for covering Electric Funeral live. I’ve been spinning this one a lot lately. Check this and the other great records on Collapse Records out. Members of this band were also recently in Get Real.

Top 100 Of The Eighties: Beyond-No Longer At Ease

Beyond No Longer At Ease LP Combined Effort Records 1989 This is another record, much like the Burn record, which really blew my mind. Beyond were pretty legendary to me before I even heard them. Remember this is the days before file sharing, eBay, and CDR’s. If you were lucky you had cool people in your town or pen pals who hooked you up with classic records and demos. Thankfully I had a bit from column A & B so I got a video of Beyond when I was 16. I was floored by this band who played lightning fast…

Top 100 Of The Nineties: Burn

Burn Self Titled EP Revelation Records 1991 Burn are one of my favorite bands. When I first heard this record this was pretty mind blowing. It was still hardcore, but it sounded fresh and new without getting too metal or stupid. This is proof that you can do something “new” with hardcore without bringing in corny mainstream riffs or anything stupid like that. This record is still available from Revelation Records. Apparently they finally fixed the misspelling on the back. Burn also finally released their 2nd recording on CD as The Last Great Sea. There are a lot of great…

Lion Of Judah-Universal Peace

Lion Of Judah Universal Peace CD Youngblood Records I have had mixed feelings about all of Lion Of Judah’s previous records. I enjoyed their performance in a live setting, but on record they just haven’t really been able to move me. A lot of people say LOJ sound like Burn, but I don’t hear it at all. I do hear a variety of influences: Early Fugazi, I Against I era Bad Brains, and honestly I keep thinking of the band Heroin while listening to this. This is pretty good I guess. A few songs drift into “too much rock” for…

Parade Brigade #2 Intro Bust

These are our personal pages from Parade Brigade #2. Again, mine is very brief. #2 All I have to say is it’s good to be back! It has been a really long time between issues, shit happens, things just get in the way. In the future we will hopefully be doing this more often. Things have been hectic and priorities change. I can no longer spend 24/7 on hardcore even though I somehow get sucked into doing it sometimes. Hardcore is in my blood, this is the kind of thing which will keep me involved in the scene. I love…

Lion Of Judah-Demo

Lion of Judah 2005 Demo http://howsyouredge.com/loj/ I have really mixed feelings about this demo. On one hand, musically Lion of Judah are influenced by two of my favorite bands-The Bad Brains and Burn. On the other hand, while those bands are influences for Lion of Judah, I do not think they fully embrace them on this demo and end up sounding like a mundane, straightforward, hardcore band at the end of the day. The songs are interesting and stay under the three-minute mark, but nothing really grabs me. I see potential here though; I think another recording may bring out…
