April 2012 Reviews

Stick Together Demo This Wilkes-Barre band plays 88 style hardcore that reminds me a lot of Four Walls Falling and Release. Good stuff. Mindless Human Conditioning Tape Despite their name, Mindless are not so kind of Infest worship band (although I call dibs on Human Conditioning as a band name…I dig it). Mindless remind me a bit of His Hero Is Gone, but with some 1990’s power violence influence (Charles Bronson I think?). This is a pretty interesting sound and I would like to hear more from them. Fashionable Activism #2 I really liked the firsti ssue of this fanzine…

March 2012 Reviews

No Tolerance (Full Set) from hate5six on Vimeo. Bad Noids Demo Fast, distorted, hardcore that reminds me a lot of H-100s. This would have fit in really well with that crop of late nineties bands in this vein. I want to hear more. Iron Age The Sleeping Eye LP Tee Pee Records This is Iron Age at their finest. A great combination of their earlier NYHC influenced material with the more recent, more “metal” influences. The songs are fast and heavy without a lot of stupid metal bullshit besides one instrumental interlude style track. Two earlier tracks from their eps are rerecorded as…

Reviews For The Week Of July 25th

Mind Eraser at some Scion sponsored gig. I giggled at how DFJ bums out the bouncers. Blessed Offal Self Titled Tape Death metal coming highly recommended by friends who dig this stuff. While a few songs go on forever, Blessed Offal keeps them interesting with enough changes of pace to not lose me. This is pretty good. United Youth Demo Decent 88 style hardcore that goes by in the blink of an eye. I see a lot of potential for an ep. Keep going. Vaccine Crimes In Blood 5″ Painkiller Records I am glad this is a 5″ because there…

Cervix-Tour Tape

Cervix Tour Tape Yet another great crust band. Recently, there seems to be a lot of them. Music in the vein of Nausea or Anti Cimex with distorted, political, lyrics. Well worth checking out. This band is from New York City, so hopefully I will get to see them sometime soon.

Pisschrist/Framtid Split 7″

PissChrist/Framtid Split 7″ HG Fact Records A split combining the best of Australia and Japan. Framtid’s Under The Ashes LP is one of the top five or ten records of the past decade and their tracks here, while not quite as good, are still really solid. Fans of bands like Judgment, Bastard, Anti Cimex, etc take note. Pisschrist have not impressed me much before, but their songs on this record are solid D-Beat inspired ragers. Definitely worth checking out.

The Holy Mountain-Entrails

The Holy Mountain Entrails LP No Idea Records I have heard a lot of hype for this band lately. Some people say they sound like Tragedy, others say they are pretty cheesy. While the influence of bands like Tragedy is apparent, Entrails really fails to catch my interest. The attempt at what Tragedy is doing is apparent: this is crusty sounding hardcore but it is so catchy and poppy that any rage it has is totally deflated. There are even segway tracks like Tragedy has. Entrails is too poppy and instead of reminding me of bands like Born Against or…
