Life’s A Rape Fanzine

Life’s A Rape Fanzine #1 & #2 If you’re scratching your head about the name, so was I until I realized it from an M.D.C. song. Life’s A Rape is a promising new fanzine from the San Diego area. A lot of the things that make a great fanzine are here: cut and paste, DIY styled layouts, a lot of photos, and interesting writing. Between the two issues there are interviews with Hatred Surge, Life Crisis, Fucked Up, Hard Skin and (ugh) P. C. Death Squad. There are also some cool Cleveland hardcore stories and a reprint of an old…

Top 100 Of The Nineties: Citizen’s Arrest-A Light In The Darkness

Citizens Arrest A Light In The Darkness 7” Wardance Records 1990 Citizens Arrest, while other New York bands were playing youth crew or noodling on guitar solos as their mullets got bigger, were playing raging hardcore in the early nineties. A Light In The Darkness is brutal; a great mix of Siege, Septic Death, and all things Italian and Scandinavian. This is an essential seven inch, one of the best ever. Citizens Arrest were also on a bunch of compilations and have a great WNYU set. Their LP Colossus, while not as good as the seven inch, is also very…

Kristin Hersh

Kristin Hersh is one of my favorite people ever. I love her solo work and her work in the incredible Throwing Muses. Her blog is great; she talks about family, friends, and her music. Her most recent entry, about her family getting ready for tour (she brings her family on tour…cool!) is hilarious and has this story in the middle: We drove across the country one summer when we all had shaved heads (August in New Orleans’ll make anybody reach for the razor) and people seemed to think we were a tiny cult. The kids wanted to play this up…

Boris-Live CD (Guest Review By Chris Alpino)

BORIS Live 3xCD Set Archive Recently released on the Archive label, this is now way out of print. It came out in time for Boris’ recent US tour which Boris had for sale at shows. These were available as individual CD’s or as a full set with a thick paper stock slipcase keeping all three CD’s together. There were a total of 320 sets made with the 4″ slipcase. I’ve only listened to the 1st +3rd CD’s and I have to say this is some of the better Boris material I’ve heard. While the material on here is not unreleased,…

Government Warning-No Way Out

Government Warning No Way Out 7” No Way Records I really like this record. Government Warning (great name!) play snotty early eighties styled hardcore in the vein of stuff like The Necros & Hated Youth. I could see myself listening to this one a lot. My favorite part of this record is how authentic to the 82′ style it is. I could figure this record for being outtakes from Flex Your Head or an unreleased Touch & Go record. The cover also looks like an early hardcore record. Check them out at the No Way Records website.

Rorschach

This interview was originally in Maximum Rock N Roll #100. This would have been reprinted in issue #2 of Not Normal Fanzine Interview May 10, 1991.  Present were Nick (Guitar), Keith (guitar), Charles (vocals), seminal guitarist Jon Hiltz, and Wardance label magnate Fred Alva.  Interview by Sam Mcpheeters.  MRR: There seems to be a big discrepancy between the earlier material you all recorded for several comps-Evacuate’s Look At All The Children Now, and Irate’s Forever 7”-and the sound that you got on the album.  It sounds like two different bands… Charles: The person we recorded the earliest stuff with, Don…

Profile: Voices Forming Weapons

Back when Parade Brigade Fanzine was still in operation one of the bands I really wanted to do something with was Voices Forming Weapons. They broke up, and then our zine ended, before anything could be done. I knew some of the members from their previous band All Chrome. All Chrome were one of the underrated bands of the late nineties. Voices Forming Weapons came out of the ashes of that band and played hardcore in a similar vein; Hot Water Music, Swiz, Verbal Assault, and San Diego emo comes to mind when I hear these guys. They post out…

Top 100 Of The Eighties: 7 Seconds-Walk Together Rock Together

7 Seconds Walk Together Rock Together LP Positive Force/BYO Records 1985 Walk Together Rock Together is a classic record. Few bands have been able to balance melody with speed the way that they do. Like most young punks I heard The Crew before hearing this record. I remember the first time I heard it (borrowed it from someone I think) I was so psyched to hear Ian Mackaye’s doing back ups on In Your Face. Most of the time when bands have “guests” on their records it sucks, or it is a younger band having some has-been as a trophy…

The Gatecrashers-…Are A Bunch Of Mother Fuckers

The Gatecrashers …Are A Bunch of Mother Fuckers LP Parts Unknown Records The Gatecrashers are a band I have enjoyed previously but never really paid a ton of attention to. I do remember being amused by their piss take on Break Down The Walls on a previous record. This LP reminds me a lot of New Jersey’s own already classic band Tear It Up. Musically, it is well done but just does not grab me the way that bands like Tear It Up do. If you dig this style, check this record out though.

Little Rascals-Wig Out @ Asa’s

Little Rascals Wig Out At Asa’s 7” Collapse Records After being blown away by these guys twice live this summer, I had to check out their record. The shore’s own Bob Shedd put this one out so you know it will be good. The Little Rascals play NYHC style with heavy mosh parts. Did I mention how heavy the mosh parts are? I am not really much of a mosher anymore but both times I saw these guys I had to hit the dance floor. This is one of the best records to come out of the shore in a…
