Ash Monday, Charge, Ensign, Test Of Courage, The Fire Still Burns, Triple Threat, Vision
One of our friends put this show on. Vision had never played Manahawkin before, but Neurotic Impulse did in 1987. Ash Monday and Test of Courage were local bands. If I recall correctly, ToC covered an Underdog song? I don’t think Charge played this show. Triple Threat were good. I liked their 7″, which tried to blend speedy youth crew hardcore with something like Bl’ast! or Pressure Release. Generally it is pretty good. The Fire Sill Burns had members of Ensign and some others. Oh and Ensign played too. We packed it up front for Vision. Some of my students…

ADD, Blind Society, Fast Times, GI Schmoe, Inside Fight, Rise Above, Three Against One
I have too big memories of this show: Hanging out at a variety of band tables as the night went on and being very social with people is one. Second is Three Against One covering War Zone, which got a big crowd reaction as you can see on the video. ADD was another cool band that did a good demo at this time. I saw them a few times right around this era.

Breakdown, Friendly Fire, Striking Distance
Local news: Manahawkin’s own Friendly Fire played this show. They came back and played two I think?) shows with a few new members. They went over okay and covered War Zone and Inside Out. Striking Distance played the shore a lot in 00/01, so I don’t remember much specifically about them at this show. Breakdown played a great set as usual. I went flying over a table at one point that people were diving off of too. There was a fight in the parking lot afterwards that got the cops called. I helped break it up and then went inside…

Adamantium, Bane, Death By Stereo, Ensign, Shady View Terrace
Two big memories about this show: This was Mackenzie’s final show with Ensign. One of my favorite people in NJ going way back to when I first met him in the mid 90s. Second, it was brutally hot on this day and I ended up watching Bane’s set from the stairs outside because at least there was a slight breeze there instead of just moisture and heat like inside the venue. I got really burnt and it hurt a lot the next day.

Count Me Out, Intention, Mouthpiece, The Killing Flame
Late 2000 was a weird time in my life. I was about to finish community college and had really pushed away a lot of my friends. This was right around when a lot of people began breaking edge and getting heavy into partying and whatnot. Even on campus, I had been spending a lot more time with a friend I made in a Gender Studies class (who was kind of hardcore scene ajace) than whoever was left from our original crew. I was also taking back to back to back classes, none of which I really liked, so I went…

Count Me Out, Striking Distance, Third Degree, Time Flies, True Blue
Hey, a show in my hometown! The Elks Lodge in Manahawkin hosted a few shows around this time as it seemed the NJHC scene was transitioning around a number of venues in places like Manasquan, Old Bridge, and Brick. This also worked out really well for me because I had gotten in a car accident earlier that week on the way to work. I was fine, although it could have been really, really, bad, but my car needed some work. Thankfully, I grabbed a ride with someone and headed over to the show. The big draw for me at this…

Cut The Shit, Dead Nation, Fast Times, Forward To Death, Full Speed Ahead
I don’t remember a ton about this show. I think I hung out outside for a lot of it. I ended up packed up front in the left corner for Full Speed Ahead, which kind of put me in the way of various band members for a couple of songs before I dove out and then took a step back into the crowd.

A Death In The Family, American Nightmare, Good Clean Fun, Spark Lights The Friction, The Hope Conspiracy
This show was on Easter and didn’t get a great turn out. I mostly went to see the first, and only, I think, show for A Death In The Family. A friend of mine was in that band. Members had also been in 97a, Kurbjaw, and some others. This was one of the three or four times American Nightmare played NJ before they really blew up. I don’t even remember watching them, nor did I watch any of the other bands. I mostly remember this show for a long discussion I had after it with a friend in the parking…

Dillinger Four, Down In Flames, Kill Your Idols, Something In The Water
I don’t remember a lot about this show. I think I hung out outside of the venue for most of it. I saw Dillinger Four a few times, but never liked them. They were also one of those bands that people got “over” hardcore would get mad if you didn’t like.

Black Cross, Lord Sterling, The Promise, The Suicide File
This was right around the time a lot of people in my friend group began slowly, but surely, slowing down how many shows we went to. After five hit or miss years of college, I was finally firing on all cylinders and had just finished a great paper a few days before on the history of fire fighting in colonial America (long story). I was beginning to get my head straight and realizing how toxic my relationship to the hardcore scene had become. Around this time I had also befriended a significant (well, like three or four) friends on my…
